Sudan Turns down French Initiative
Sudan yesterday rejected a French initiative submitted by the French Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, who is currently visiting the country. The initiative is aimed at hosting a meeting of key nations to find a solution to the Darfur region on 25 June. The Foreign Minister, Dr. Lam Akol, said that the time was inappropriate for such a conference.
"At this particular time...when we are waiting for the roadmap to be announced, ..we don't want any distraction," Dr. Lam Akol was quoted as stating, adding that the meeting will include parties which are not directly concerned with the Darfur case. He said that any initiatives proposed for resolving the Darfur problem have to be streamlined through the UN and AU.
On the other hand, Akol hoped that the Addis Ababa meeting will come up with details on the hybrid force and its funding, meanwhile calling on African countries to increase their troops in Darfur to expedite the deployment of troops in order that conditions return to normal.
The French Foreign Minister on his part disclosed that the French initiative which will be passed on to President Bashir calls for holding a special conference on Darfur on 25 June in Paris. He said that his talks with Dr. Akol had also discussed Sudan's implementation of the UN resolutions, the hybrid force and the conditions in Darfur which the French Minister described as degraded.
Couchner has moreover stated that development of his country's relations with Sudan was conditional with improvement in the situation in Darfur.
