Ancient Rome reborn online

Ancient Rome is the subject of the largest computer simulation of a historic city ever created. Classicists, historians and computer whizzes from the universities of Virginia and Los Angeles and Milan Polytechnic have created a virtual Rome, complete with 3D models of 31 monuments and 7,000 buildings, recreating as faithfully as possible the city as it was in the reign of the Emperor Constantine in 320 AD. Preview images from the €1.5 million “Rome Reborn” project, which has taken 11 years to complete, are currently available at www.romereborn.virginia.edu, and the entire virtual city should be posted online on its own special site by this time next year.

Rome city council has announced that the Rome Reborn project will be used for a special virtual tour film entitled “Rewind Rome”, which will be permanently housed in the 120-seat Teatro Colosseo in Via Capo d’Africa from next year. Rome residents and tourists will be able to “walk” the streets of the ancient city and meet its citizens via the 25-minute-long 3D film. The virtual tour is due to be unveiled on Rome’s next birthday – 21 April 2008.
