44 students disciplined for T-shirts

Like the phrase emblazoned across the front of their controversial T-shirts says, 44 Livonia high-school seniors were "Puschin' It To The Limit."

The Stevenson high schoolers were suspended today and may not be allowed to attend their senior prom and graduation ceremony, because the back of the red tees read, "Class of .08 Seniors," a reference to the blood-alcohol level.

The students, who also were barred from tonight's honors ceremony, are scheduled to attend a special meeting Friday -- while everyone else goes to a pep rally -- to find out what's they must do in order to earn back their revoked privileges.

"I'm really nervous," senior Jennifer Verba said. "It's the big event of your high school life. It's what you look forward to. They're being way too strict about it. They're trying to set an example, make a point, but they haven't treated us fairly."

It's all part of a school custom called the Ripening of the Tomato, which one day every year has the freshmen wear green T-shirts, the sophomores yellow, the juniors orange and the seniors in red. Verba also recalled that seniors in previous years had T-shirts even more scandalous but were allowed to turn the offending tees inside out or go home to change their shirts.

Livonia Public Schools spokeswoman Donna McDowell, who couldn't confirm those senior slogans, explained that students were cautioned about appropriate behavior in April and again last week.

She said the district's reaction "is showing students that when they're making decisions, there are consequences... Kids could make some unsafe decisions at this time of year."

Some parents are siding with their children, including Verba's father.

"I showed it to him and he just laughed," said the 17-year-old, who instead worries about Grand Valley State University finding out and revoking her acceptance. "He was disappointed I'm not able to attend the honors ceremony."
